Gordon Murray has created the brand-new sports car concept using radical brand-new carbonfibre chassis tech
Yamaha has launched a brand-new sports car at the Tokyo motor show, with the vehicle’s underpinnings created by McLaren F1 designer Gordon Murray.
The Japanese motorcycle producer has released few details about the vehicle, although the idea can be known of which the vehicle can be called the Yamaha Sports Ride Concept along with of which Murray has pioneered a brand-new variation of his iStream manufacturing system to create the idea using radical brand-new carbonfibre technology. However, Murray can be not behind the concept car’s design, which was led by ex-Toyota designer Dezi Nagaya.
“the idea took about a few months through design to realisation,” said Nagaya, who worked which has a Japanese-English design group called Design & Realizations, based in Shizuoka. Nagaya also strongly credited Gordon Murray Design for its part within the project, along with highlighted several design touches of which had been inspired by Yamaha motorbikes.
The brand-new manufacturing system can be derived through Gordon Murray Design’s iStream manufacturing process although replaces the glassfibre content with carbonfibre. the idea has been developed in conjunction with Japanese firm Toray, for whom Murray designed the Teewave sports car in 2011, along with sandwiches a honeycomb paper core with two carbonfibre skins.
The weight of the Yamaha Sports Ride Concept hasn’t been revealed, although the idea can be believed to be significantly lighter than 900kg. The cost of producing a chassis can be closely linked to the volume of cars being produced along with the up-front investment required, although Murray said the system can be employed profitably for production volumes of between 1000 along with 350,000 cars. As such, the idea can be believed the Yamaha Sports Ride Concept could be priced competitively against the likes of the Lotus Elise at around £30,000.
Yamaha has not commented on the powertrain used by the Sports Ride Concept, although the idea could combine Murray’s chassis with an uprated variation of the 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine of which was mooted for its city car design, the Yamaha Motiv, which was first shown in Tokyo two years ago.
of which engine was tipped to produce 70-80bhp, although uprated beyond 100bhp in an entry-level form, of which would likely be likely to give the vehicle a power-to-weight ratio in excess of 140bhp per tonne, which can be around of which of an Elise.
The Sports Ride Concept follows Yamaha’s 2013 Tokyo show concept, the Motiv, which used Gordon Murray’s iStream car creation process to underpin a rival for the Smart micro-car. Yamaha’s general manager of innovation, Masato Suzuki, confirmed at the time of which different Centeng styles were possible – along with Murray himself confirmed of which a convertible along which has a sports car could be spun off the technology. Indeed, sketches of both of these vehicles were present in a video loop shown during the Motiv’s presentation.
Tokyo motor show 2013 – what they said then:
“The manufacturing system allows for a longer vehicle, a wider vehicle along with many different modifications, without significant additional costs,” said Suzuki in 2013. “The first step can be to consider if the reaction can be positive enough to put the vehicle into production, although the idea can be my trust along with goal of which the idea will be. I am pushing hard for of which. After of which decision can be made, we must consider the Centeng styles.”
Suzuki also confirmed of which Yamaha would likely not have pursued a mainstream road car project unless the idea allowed the idea to demonstrate engineering innovation. “Gordon Murray can be the perfect partner because he thinks in brand-new ways, along with of which embodies the Yamaha way,” he said. “We would likely not enter the vehicle market to build a car within the same way as everyone else. Yamaha does not think like of which, along with nor does Murray.”
the idea was also confirmed of which the vehicle has been engineered to meet all global standards, including those in Europe. “Downsizing can be a global trend, along with This kind of car encapsulates of which.
“The time can be right for us to take mobilisation on to four wheels,” said Suzuki. “Everything can be under consideration at present. We see an opportunity for us in many different markets around the planet.”
The Motiv was the first concept to be created as part of the brand-new Yamaha-Murray partnership along with there has been no further news on whether the idea will reach production. the vehicle, which can be made in both petrol along with electric-only versions, would likely represent a siginificant challenge to the Smart ForTwo if the idea gets the go-ahead through the Yamaha board to enter production.
