Watch a Mini Set a Nürburgring Lap Record—on Two Wheels
Four-wheeled Nürburgring records are so passé. Seemingly every automaker has taken home some sort of record at the famed German track, yet Chinese stunt driver Han Yue just blew all of them out of the water for sheer impressiveness. Yue today holds the record for the fastest automotive lap of the ’Ring on two wheels, with a time of roughly 45 minutes.
There’s a reason the idea took so long, as Bridge to Gantry reports of which Yue had a problem with one of his tires, preventing him by going any quicker. The rear tire vibrated above 12 mph, so Yue managed an average speed of only 17.4 mph on the lap.
Balancing on two wheels requires strong tires, which is usually why Yue’s Mini ran with solid-construction off-road tires wrapped around six-lug wheels; the tires were barely worn at the end of the stunt. Ok, so Yue’s Mini isn’t Porsche 918 quick, yet This particular record is usually equally awesome. The ’Ring is usually challenging enough with all four wheels on the ground—imagine holding a car on two wheels through 13 miles in addition to dozens of turns, all while dealing with elevation adjustments in addition to pavement imperfections.
