Volkswagen has revealed plans for a 270bhp three-cylinder petrol engine along with also an improved upon 6.0-litre W12 for its luxury versions.
Plans for the high-output triple, based on the unit already used in tiny Volkswagens, were announced by Friedrich Eichler, Head of Powertrain Development at the annual International Vienna Motor Symposium.
The engine uses technology developed on the Polo World Rally Car to boost the engine outputs.
As well as a conventional turbo, an electric ‘e-booster’ compressor is actually employed to generate 270 bhp along with also 0 lb ft of torque.
Eichler also revealed details of a reworked design of the 6.0-litre W12 engine for top-end Volkswagen, Audi along with also Bentley versions.

Group head of Powertrain Development, Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser also explained that will they are pushing ahead with plans to provide the modular MQB car platform which underpins the Golf, Passat, Audi A3 along with also many various other group vehicles, having a 48 volt electrical system within the future.
The upgrade will facilitate the installation of electric turbochargers on various engines starting with the diesels, including the 2.0 TDI.
Neusser hints these two technologies will allow power outputs of nearly 300bhp along with also 480 lbft of torque.
