Headlight issue prompts investigation into the Bimmer’s battery, although what’s found lurking beneath the rear bench causes much frowning

Things were going well: the all 5 was behaving itself, starting on the button as well as also driving superbly for a 21-year-old. Until that will will be, I left the idea unattended for a couple of days. When I picked the idea up originally, the previous owner had needed to jump start the idea using his wife’s car. This particular should have sounded the alarm bells, although the idea was cold as well as also wet as well as also I wanted to go home.

So in I came one morning last week to find that will the driver’s door would certainly only unlock on the key. Of course, a quarter turn of the ignition revealed the battery was completely dead. No matter, I thought, I’ll just jump the idea back to life.

Shortly after, the idea was back with us, as well as also after a further 20 minutes at idle I got behind the wheel to run the idea up as well as also down the road a few times as well as also get some charge inside battery. However, a quick test of the headlights killed the engine instantly, as well as also although the idea would certainly turn over as well as also fire by itself, the request for extra power for the lights resulted inside same thing.

I’d been assured by the previous owner that will the all 5 had been treated to a completely new battery just two months back, although what greeted me as I lifted up the rear seat bench to access the idea reduced me to swearing as well as also the foetal position.

A previous battery had clearly given up the ghost as well as also spewed its discharge into the floor plan. Said acidic discharge had then eaten away at the paint as well as also soundproofing, leaving behind what looked like a lethal tiramisu that has a car battery sat on top.

Cautious that will there may today be a wider electrical issue, I called the AA into action. The Bimmer’s alternator was working just fine, as well as also the battery was charging, albeit slowly, although one reason for the idea draining so quickly was that will the boot lights were staying on even with the automobile locked, so out came the bulbs.

Even so, the idea was clear This particular completely new battery wasn’t big enough to do the job, as well as also even after a trickle charge the idea wasn’t up to powering the engine as well as also headlights at the same time. A quick check of Euro Car Parts’ website revealed there was a more powerful variation of the same brand available – as well as also with 50% off, too – three miles away. Half an hour later the completely new one was in place as well as also I had headlights!

The next job was to clean up the mess, which required a trip to Tesco, oddly. I got some very funny looks at the till, although rubber gloves, baking soda as well as also wet wipes purchase later, I was ready to tackle the problem.

the idea wasn’t a pretty job: the acid had got everywhere, although crucially the surrounding wiring looked fine. With the idea cleaned up, I placed the completely new battery on top. The next step will be to buy some rust-inhibiting primer as well as also give the idea two or three coats of that will, followed by a rust-inhibiting paint.

Another lesson learned, then: always check the battery when buying a used car. Thankfully, a very firm push on the floor pan hasn’t revealed any signs of weakness inside metal, although if I’d left the idea for much longer, things could have been a lot worse.

I today have a working car again, even when the idea’s left on its own for a few days. I’ll be back next week to update you on how the primer as well as also paint work out. There’s a first time for everything!
