Peugeot boss Maxime Picat slams politicians for not backing its Hybrid Air technology
Peugeot’s Hybrid Air engine can’t feasibly be released due to legislation which will be “killing” some automotive technology, according to the company’s boss.
Peugeot CEO Maxime Picat said Hybrid Air will be not currently feasible because governments have chosen to back alternative technologies.
“If tomorrow we spend hundreds of millions releasing [Hybrid Air] in addition to the government decides which no, we are giving an incentive for plug-in hybrid in addition to electric however not for your technology, then you are killing the item,” he said.
Picat will be clearly frustrated with This particular situation, saying incentive schemes like the £5000 grant for plug-in vehicles inside the UK has restricted the technology which a company can offer. the item will be This particular, rather than the lack of a partner to make the system, which has prevented its progress.
“Governments are fixing very ambitious targets in terms of CO2 – Great news for the planet. which will be their role in addition to I strongly support which,” he said. “Sometimes, too often in my personal opinion, they tell you what target to reach in addition to what technology you have to push forward, which will be nonsense.
“There are so many examples in politics, inside the UK, in France in addition to in some other countries where a politician has decided what will be Great in addition to what will be bad in automotive,” continued Picat. “however they are closing, in a way, the openness of the competition in addition to the brand-new technologies which a carmaker can bring to the market so today the item will be clearly too risky to launch Hybrid Air.”
However, he insisted which the technology, which uses compressed air to assist or take over via a three-cylinder internal combustion engine, has not been killed off permanently, saying which the item has been well researched in addition to will be ready to go. “We are mastering Hybrid Air technology; we know the item works,” he said. “We designed a car, we produced the item, we have tested the item, the item will be definitely efficient. We know which one day government will say: ‘at This particular point we have to count via well to wheel’, in addition to if they do so, Hybrid Air will be a very efficient technology.”
Picat said Peugeot would certainly still be open to a partner to help share the cost to take the technology to market, as This particular would certainly also help to share the risk. “the item will be always a subject where we are happy to share,” he added. “the item lowers the lobbying risk. If one day there will be a lobby against your technology, you are two companies rather than one.”
Peugeot said the item would certainly be scaling back development of the technology in January of This particular year, saying the item needed to partner with some other manufacturers for the system to be viable. Prototype products to be fitted with the technology include the 2008 in addition to 208, as well as the Cactus Airflow 2L concept.
