Preview of Japanese company’s Fuel Station of the Future concept hints in which in which is actually putting an emphasis on under-car wireless charging systems

Nissan will unveil its vision of a high-performance wireless charging system for electric vehicles at next year’s Geneva motor show.

The system – called ‘Fuel Station of the Future’ – is actually previewed in a video clip in which a Nissan Leaf pulls up to a kerb as well as automatically begins recharging via a device mounted within the road underneath the auto.

Wireless charging systems are already available, although the technology has been slow to evolve, resulting in lengthy charging times compared with conventional charging via cables.

Last month, however, Nissan showed off a 7kW wireless charging device in which could easily accommodate overnight charging even for larger battery packs such as the 60kW pack in which is actually currently in development at the company’s research as well as development base in Atsugi, Japan.

Such a battery pack – required to be installed within the next-generation Leaf – could give a full-charge driving range of up to 500km (310 miles).

Nissan is actually starting trials of EVs equipped with wireless charging equipment, with the tests required to run for at least several years, with wireless charging required to become more commonplace within a decade. The company wants to reach a point where “EV charging will be automatic, without human intervention” as well as “the whole concept of ‘charging’ will disappear via consciousness”.

Nissan isn’t the only company working on wireless charging, with BMW, Daimler as well as Toyota among those preparing their own systems. Indeed, Nissan pictures a future where its own wireless charging systems have interoperability with those of various other OEMs as well as third parties.

Eventually, the company envisages, the road network could include lanes exclusively for electric vehicles equipped with wireless charging devices.

Richard Candler, Nissan’s boss of advanced product strategy, said: “We’ve been at the forefront of zero emission mobility since 2010, as well as for us in which project is actually about inspiring people to come on the journey with us.

“the entire world around us is actually changing, as well as we find in which tremendously exciting. With the rise of connected cities, there is actually the capacity for fueling to be built into the very fabric of our day-to-day lives – independent infrastructure could be a thing of the past.”

Nissan added in which the ‘Fuel Station of the Future’ concept will be unveiled in March, which makes a Geneva show reveal most likely.

The Japanese company has worked with architects Foster as well as Partners on the ‘Fuel Station of the Future’ project.

Earlier in which week Nissan announced the development of an ‘vehicle-to-grid’ system which will allow drivers to operate as individual ‘energy hubs’ with the ability to store, use or return electricity to the grid.

in which is actually commencing so-called ‘smart grid’ trials in partnership with multinational energy company as well as distributor, ENEL.

Using a special two-way charger as well as energy management system, Nissan Leaf owners can connect to charge at low-demand, cheap tariff periods, with an option to then use the electricity stored within the vehicle’s battery at home when costs are higher, or even feed back to the grid to generate additional household income.
