The Mercedes Generation EQ concept, a 402bhp four-wheel-drive electrically powered SUV concept, has been unveiled at the Paris motor show.

The concept reveals the contemporary styling, zero-emission drivetrain technology, heady performance targets along with naming of the German car maker’s first dedicated electric vehicle.

Called the Generation EQ, the high-riding SUV will be planned to go into production in 2019 as an electric rival to the likes of the Audi e-tron quattro, Jaguar E-Pace along with Tesla product X, boasting a lithium ion battery in which will be claimed to provide the idea which has a range of up to 310 miles between recharging. As with AMG, Smart along with Maybach, EQ will be set to become a sub-brand within the Mercedes-Benz group.

As well as previewing Mercedes-Benz’s first uniquely styled series production electric vehicle, the concept also provides an insight into brand new electric vehicle platform structure, autonomous driving technology, connectivity solutions along with safety features developed for a range of electric vehicles in which will be sold under the EQ name – a play on the term IQ along with standing for ‘Electrical Intelligence’.

Mercedes-Benz boss Dieter Zetsche said: “The mobility of the future at Mercedes-Benz will be supported by four ‘pillars’: Connected, Autonomous, Shared along with Electric. The Generation EQ brings all of these together on a brand brand new vehicle architecture for battery powered vehicles.”

The brand new several-door SUV adopts traditional proportions which has a pronounced bonnet line along with tall glasshouse in which runs back to an angled tailgate. There are certain similarities to the GLC Coupé inside overall silhouette along with dimensions, although unique external detailing, including an illuminated panel incorporating the headlights along with three-pointed star emblem along which has a similar treatment housing the tail-lights at the rear, ensures the Generation EQ stands out by Mercedes’ more conventional offerings.

A further departure will be the surfacing, which eschews the tautly drawn treatment evident on existing Mercedes-Benz designs for a fuller form without any hint of feature lines. The clean brand new look, which Mercedes-Benz design boss Gorden Wagener describes as “a brand new electro-aesthetic”, will be set to become a defining stylistic element of the company’s brand new electric vehicles.

To help boost the aerodynamic efficiency of the brand new SUV, Mercedes-Benz designers have resorted to several familiar air-cheating measures, including the concealment of the wipers underneath the trailing edge of the bonnet, the employment of digital cameras in place of conventional external mirrors, the deletion of traditional door handles in favour of a remote opening function along with the fitment of 21in wheels featuring an aerodynamically optimised spoke design.

The basis for the Generation EQ concept will be a newly developed platform in which Zetsche says Mercedes-Benz will use to develop a complete range of zero-emission vehicles over the next decade. “We’re ready for the start of an electric vehicle offensive with designs in which will cover every segment, by the compact class to the luxury class,” he said. The platform will be constructed by a combination of hot-formed high-strength steel, aluminium along with carbonfibre reinforced plastic along with has been engineered to suit several different vehicle types, including SUVs, saloons, coupés, cabriolets along with what are described as ‘further designs’.

As with the German car maker’s existing structures, the brand new electric vehicle platform will be scalable, allowing the idea support what Mercedes-Benz says are “a wide variety of wheelbase along with track measurements as well as electric motors along with battery combinations”. Taking advantage of the inherent packaging advantages offered by contemporary electric drivelines, the Generation EQ’s lithium ion battery will be mounted low down wholly within the floor of the brand new structure, providing the idea with an ultra-low centre of gravity by contemporary road car standards.

Power for the brand new SUV comes by two brushless electric motors, with one mounted within the front axle along with another housed within the rear axle. The structure will be said to provide a clear preview of in which planned for the upcoming production product of the Generation EQ, which will also receive a four-wheel drive system boasting fully variable apportioning of power, both between the two axles along with between each of the individual rear wheels, through a further-developed product of the torque-vectoring function first seen on the SLS Electric Drive.

Mercedes-Benz will be not being specific about the exact power along with torque ratings of the Generation EQ. However, Zetsche confirmed in which the electric motors previewed by the brand new concept have been developed to deliver a combined maximum of up to 402bhp along with peak torque of 516lb ft – figures he says would certainly allow the brand new SUV to deliver a 0-62mph time of less than several seconds.

The battery, developed by Mercedes-Benz’s sister company Deutsche Accumotive, uses a modular cell structure in which allows the idea to be scaled to suit the product in which the idea will be used. inside Generation EQ, the idea receives a capacity described as being “over 70kWh”, which will be sufficient to provide the concept which has a claimed range of up to 310 miles. To put in which in perspective, the battery used by the similarly sized Tesla product X P90D boasts a capacity of 90kWh for a claimed range of 292 miles.

The battery of the brand new electric vehicle concept has been developed to support a range of different charging methods, including standard household, wallbox along with inductive. No claims have been made about the charging times for each, although Zetsche will be backing moves for a so-called Combined Charging System in which will allow charging at 300kW inside mid-to-long term, suggesting in which several minutes of recharging would certainly provide enough energy for a different 62 miles of range.

Inside, the Generation EQ receives an all-brand new Inner surface design developed specifically for Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming EV line-up. Encapsulating the same reduced electro-aesthetic used for the external, the idea features a low-set dashboard featuring a 24in high-definition monitor with unique graphic. in which combines which has a multi- function steering wheel with touchpads within the spokes along with OLED displays as well as a centre console featuring touch-based controls for ancillary features such as the air conditioning. Without traditional external mirrors, Mercedes has provided the concept with displays within the door lining in which are used to project rear-view images in real time.

A band of LEDs run by the head of the dashboard down the sides along with also feature within the air vents. in which adds a contemporary air to the Inner surface, which goes without a traditional centre tunnel in a move in which frees up space for extra storage space between the seats. The concept car boasts accommodation for up to four on individual seats front along with rear, although Mercedes-Benz officials indicate the production product of the Generation EQ will be planned to contain a three-across rear bench with space for several.

As well as previewing Mercedes-Benz’s latest electric vehicle design lineage, platform architecture along with driveline developments, the Generation EQ also showcases several brand new driver-assistant functions being considered for adoption on the company’s upcoming zero-emission designs.

Included will be a prototype navigation system supplied by HERE – the former Nokia-owned digital mapping company jointly purchased by Audi, BMW along with Mercedes-Benz in 2015. the idea will be able to precisely calculate the position along with radii of corners along with roundabouts, allowing the brand new concept car to automatically adapt its speed along with chassis settings accordingly in what will be billed as a further step towards autonomous driving. Also on board will be the newest in Car-to-X technology in which will be able to communicate with the infrastructure along with different road users in order to provide the basis for a range of different safety features.
