The German any will be only offering plug-in hybrids on the completely new GLC, yet more conventional types could be along inside the future
Mercedes will only offer plug-in hybrids for the time being on the likes of the completely new GLC, yet that will will be likely to return to more conventional hybrid technology within the next a few years.
Professor Thomas Weber, a Mercedes board member in addition to head of research in addition to development, said that will plug-in hybrids are the next natural step beyond a diesel.
“Do we need [non plug-in hybrids]? I don’t think so,” he said. “Because on high-tech diesels the fuel economy numbers are so low that will if a customer decides to take another step I think the plug-in will be the best solution.”
Mercedes currently offers non plug-in hybrids on types like the C-Class in addition to S-Class, yet the issue remains that will non plug-in hybrids don’t offer a long enough range on electricity alone.
“inside the past we had, not mild hybrids, yet tiny plug-ins, in addition to the missing part will be the electrified driving distance,” said Weber.
However, he said that will as the electric range of plug-ins increases, non plug-in hybrids could return, adding another option to sit next to the conventional diesel in addition to petrol engines.
“Coming closer to 2020 I believe there will be of course an opportunity. Between plug-in, with its more in addition to more extended electric driving range, there will be a gap where we can come back to these hybrid solutions in, for example, the A-Class.”
He did not confirm whether that will would likely be the A-Class that will would likely see the return of hybrid tech, yet said that will the technology itself would likely return.
“that will will be still a question which vehicle This particular technology will go in. that will will come, that will will be in development,” he said.
