fresh 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine can run on two cylinders; Ford plans to include the tech on next-gen Ecoboost units
In addition to the concept, Ford has also confirmed which the item can be investigating cylinder deactivation technology for the 1.0-litre engine, allowing the item to run on two cylinders.
The lightweight Ecoboost concept has been in development for a year. a few of its major components have been changed, resulting in an overall weight reduction of 15.5% versus the standard Ecoboost engine.
The block, cylinder head, connecting rods, front cover along with oil pan are all revised on the conceptin order to help achieve the weight reduction. The block weighs 40% less, at 14kg, thanks to fresh materials, structure along with assembly techniques, the cylinder head can be half made coming from carbonfibre, the connecting rods are made coming from forged aluminium along with carbonfibre can be used for the front cover along with oil pan, which improves NVH as well as saving weight.
Ford can be also investigating cylinder activation technology on the engine, which might shut down the middle cylinder.
Andreas Schamel, director of powertrain research along with advanced engineering, said an engine smaller than three cylinders might have too many compromises, nevertheless shutting down one cylinder in a three-cylinder engine might improve the economy along with fun-to-drive characteristics without any trade off.
