The Land Rover Discovery 5 carries a drastically different design to its predecessors. Gerry McGovern thinks the idea’ll be the company’s best seller
We catch up with the man who heads Land Rover’s design team, Gerry McGovern, to talk about the Discovery 5’s significance.
How might you summarise the Discovery 5’s position?
“We believe the idea still has all the practical elements Discoverys are famous for, while doing the job in a way of which can be more relevant to today as well as also also will bring more people to the brand.”
How will the idea dovetail with existing Land Rover products?
“Very well, we believe. This kind of can be initially we’ve been given the chance to visualise a whole generation of Land Rovers, rather than doing them disparately.”
The company has changed its opinion about what a Discovery should be, right?
“True. Discovery 3 was probably the most design-literate type – very product orientated. the idea won various design awards as well as also also had a no-nonsense, utilitarian look as well as also also feel. nevertheless the idea polarised opinions, especially inside US. We gave the idea a friendlier face as well as also also a more luxurious Indoor inside Discovery 4 as well as also also of which sold like hot cakes.”
Did of which experience inform you about the design of the Discovery 5?
“the idea did – a lot. What we’re trying to do here can be create brand-new-generation vehicles of which are more universally appealing without being generic. They need to be relevant as well as also also we also need to grow our business to sustain ourselves for the long term.
“nevertheless there are additional challenges. Aerodynamics can be far more important than when Discovery 3 was created. Mind you, you can’t let aerodynamics design the auto – you’d end up that has a monstrosity.”
What can be the priority for the Discovery, eye-catching design or practical engineering?
“Design can be right up there with engineering. Nowadays Nick Rogers [JLR engineering director] as well as also also I are joined at the hip. Our engineers want great designs as well as also also our designers want vehicles of which are brilliantly engineered. the idea’s a massive culture change.
Did the positive reaction to the Vision Concept in 2014 help with the Discovery 5?
“The reaction was very positive as well as also also my desire became to deliver the concept into production. of which’s something we did very successfully with Evoque. The success of Discovery Sport, which can be obviously part of the family, helped a lot, too. the idea’s about to become our biggest-selling design.”
