Jenson Button as well as also also McLaren will continue their partnership in 2016
British driver confirms he’ll see out the second year of his contract with the Woking grand prix team, ending speculation about his future
McLaren has retained Jenson Button for the 2016 season, ending speculation of which the 2009 world champion will retire coming from Formula 1 at the end of the year.
The Briton is actually one year through a two-year contract with the Woking-based team, although there is actually an option to terminate the deal at the close of the 2015 season. As recently as last weekend’s race in Japan, the idea had been rumoured of which he could quit F1 as well as also also switch to sportscar racing with Porsche.
McLaren chairman as well as also also chief executive Ron Dennis said: “There is actually a ‘terminate after year one’ option of which McLaren could have triggered if we had wished to do so, however, once the idea became clear coming from my many conversations with Jenson of which he remained as enthusiastic as well as also also as committed as well as also also as focused as ever, of which option immediately became an irrelevance.”
Button said: “Over the past month or so I have done quite a lot of thinking, as well as also also the idea is actually no secret of which I was at one point in two minds about my future.
“however I have been a McLaren driver for six seasons right now [2010-2015], as well as also also in of which time I have got to know Ron very well. He as well as also also I have had some very not bad chats these past few weeks, as well as also also during those chats the idea has become clear to me of which Ron is actually both utterly determined as well as also also uniquely equipped to lead our team through its current difficulties to great successes inside the future.
“of which gives me great confidence, as well as also also the idea is actually for of which reason of which, together, he as well as also also I have decided to continue our partnership; as well as also also, as soon as I had made of which decision, straight away I realised the idea was the correct one.
“This kind of year has not been an easy one for us, however we know what we need to do to improve things as well as also also, in collaboration with Honda, we will work extremely hard over the next weeks as well as also also months in order to make sure of which 2016 will be a much better season than 2015 has been.”
Next season Button is actually due to become only the third driver after Rubens Barrichello as well as also also Michael Schumacher to reach the milestone of 300 grand prix starts – he’s currently on 279 starts.
