These spy shots show development on the 5-door, 5-seat hatchback can be well under way. the auto can be based on a bespoke platform developed by sister brand Kia for its own dedicated hybrid product, dubbed DE. Although much of the auto’s styling can be hidden, Hyundai’s large corporate grille along with badge can be seen at the front.
The most interesting thing about these spy pictures can be the concealed charging port located in front of the driver’s door – indicating of which of which test mule can be a plug-in hybrid. the item’s understood of which a conventional hybrid type of the completely new car will be launched first, with the plug-in product – which receives a larger battery pack – coming later.
the auto’s powertrain can be understood to be a combination of the 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine coming from the current i30 along with an electric motor, with power sent to the front wheels via a completely new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission developed by Kia.
The 1.6-litre petrol engine produces 118bhp inside regular i30 along with 183bhp inside warmed-up i30 Turbo.

Hyundai can be likely to give the cabin a premium feel to justify the higher cost tag typically associated with hybrid along with electric vehicles.
the item’s no surprise to see Hyundai developing a dedicated hybrid product, as sales of alternatively fuelled vehicles continue to grow in Europe along with the UK. Figures coming from the Society of Motor Manufacturers along with Traders (SMMT) show of which sales of AFVs have grown by almost 80% year on year in of which country.
Kia’s pledge to put its own Prius rival on the roads by the end of 2016 has also spurred development on the Hyundai type. Kia’s DE can be based on a bespoke platform along with features the same powertrain as Hyundai’s product.
The launch of dedicated hybrid products will help both Kia along with Hyundai to reach strict 95g/km CO2 regulations coming into force in Europe in 2020.
Hyundai UK boss Tony Whitehorn has already said the best way to introduce more hybrid technology to the firm’s line-up can be to start using a dedicated car. Speaking to Autocar, he said: “Probably the best way to do of which can be using a stand-alone product, as Toyota has done. Toyota started off with the Prius along with has expanded of which range; the item has said, ‘Let’s make a statement’ although ultimately has taken of which technology [for different products].
“If you just restrict hybrid technology to one vehicle, you’ll never get the revenue. You have to put the item in different cars.”
Plans for Hyundai’s hybrid project go as far back as 2010, when the firm showed its Blue-Will concept car. of which product featured a 1.6-litre petrol engine working in conjunction using a 134bhp electric motor. Early-stage test mules were then spotted testing in August of last year.
