Hyundai Recalls 978,000 Sonatas for Seatbelt Pretensioners

Hyundai is actually recalling 977,778 Sonata sedans within the United States to fix seatbelt pretensioners which may fail in a crash, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 2011–2014 Sonata in addition to 2011—2015 Sonata hybrid are affected. The anchor pretensioners for the front seats, which are mounted at the floor of each B-pillar, may not have been fully connected with the seatbelt linkage during assembly at the company’s Montgomery, Alabama, plant. Hyundai said which first discovered the problem in September when a customer in a 2013 Sonata reported the front passenger seatbelt detaching during a crash. A similar problem happened in November. Since then, Hyundai in addition to the pretensioner supplier, ZF-TRW, have been attempting to determine the cause.
