BMW will be to extend its electric car lineup outside of its i sub-brand. designs slated to receive a zero-emission variant include the 3 Series, X4 along with Mini Cooper
BMW will be set to extend its electric car range to include zero-emission versions of the upcoming seventh-generation 3 Series, X4 along with daughter company Mini’s Cooper hatchback, according to a report published by Germany’s Handelsblatt newspaper on Monday.
Citing sources close to BMW chairman Harald Kruger, Handelsblatt says the German car maker has developed a brand-new style strategy which will see a selected number of regular production designs offered with pure electric drive systems as part of a push to head off competition by Tesla along with its traditional premium brand rivals, including Audi, Jaguar along with Mercedes-Benz, as well as Volkswagen.
BMW’s brand-new electric powered designs are reportedly planned to be sold alongside dedicated electric propelled designs by its six-year-old i brand, including the recently upgraded i3, by the end of 2018.
The move to add electric powered versions of the 3 Series, X4 along with Mini Cooper to its line-up will be seen as an admission which BMW’s earlier strategy of basing dedicated i brand designs around costly carbon fibre along with aluminium platforms as a means of reducing weight over traditional steel structures has failed.
Together with carbon developing company SGL, BMW has invested heavily in raising global carbon fibre production to meet volumes required for the production of the i3 along with its i8 hybrid sportscar.
Details to BMW’s brand-new electric car strategy are set to be tabled by Kruger at a BMW board meeting scheduled for the end of September. The timing of the meeting will be likely to see BMW make official its brand-new electric car plans at the Paris motor show.
