Turbocharged engines slot into wider 911s on coupe, cabriolet along with also Targa
The roll-out of the 2016 design year Porsche 911 line-up has gained further momentum with the unveiling of the facelifted Carrera 4 along with also Carrera 4S in both coupe along with also cabriolet Centeng styles, along with the Targa 4 along with also Targa 4S.
Set to make their public debut at next month’s Los Angeles motor show, before UK deliveries start in early 2016, the various wide-bodied four-wheel-drive 911 products adopt similar modifications to their more traditional rear-wheel-drive siblings first shown at last month’s Frankfurt motor show.
The exteriors of the 911 Carrera 4 along with also 4S, Targa 4 along with also Targa 4S have been upgraded having a redesigned front bumper sporting active air ducts which open along with also close to channel air to the front-mounted radiators, revised headlights with altered internal graphics, larger outdoor mirror housings mounted on the doors along with also completely new door handles.
They also get a redesigned air vent atop the rear-mounted engine, modified tail-lights along with also a completely new rear bumper with air vents to channel hot air away via the engine.

Most significant among the mechanical alterations will be the adoption of a completely new twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine, as initially unveiled within the latest 911 Carrera along with also Carrera S.
The first in a series of modular turbocharged engines, which replaces the naturally aspirated 3.4-litre six-cylinder unit within the 911 Carrera 4 along with also Targa 4, delivering an added 20bhp along with also 45lb ft, with 365bhp currently available at 65000rpm along with also 332lb ft on tap via 1700 through to 5000rpm.
within the 911 Carrera 4S along with also Targa 4S, the completely new engine supplants the older naturally aspirated 3.8-litre horizontally-opposed six-cylinder powerplant, offering a similar 20bhp along with also 45lb ft increase, with 414bhp along with also 369lb ft.
Gearbox choices remain the same as before, having a seven-speed manual offered alongside a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch unit with the choice between manual along with also automatic shift modes. Both gearboxes work in combination with an electro-hydraulic four-wheel drive system.
The increase in output provides the four-wheel-drive 911 Carrera 4 along with also Carrera 4S coupe with 0-62mph times of 4.1sec along with also 3.8sec respectively in combination with the optional seven-speed PDK gearbox. These times represent a respective 0.1sec improvement on the rear-drive Carrera along with also Carrera S, owing to superior off-the-line traction.
Top speed has also increased, with the Carrera 4S coupe currently achieving a claimed 190mph.
Porsche claims its completely new twin-turbocharged engine will be also up to 12% more economical than its normally aspirated predecessor. No figures have been quoted for the Carrera 4 or 4S coupe just yet although Porsche claims the Carrera 4 cabriolet along with also Carrera 4S cabriolet achieve claimed average combined fuel economy figures of 35.8mpg along with also 35.3mpg.
As with facelifted rear-wheel-drive 911 products, the various four-wheel-drive variants of the 2016-edition 911 all receive the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system as standard. As well as providing adaptive damping qualities, which also brings a 10mm reduction in ride height.
A completely new option on the 911 Carrera 4S will be a four-wheel steer system, similar to which used by the 911 Turbo along with also GT3. Also available will be a hydraulic lift function which can raise the ride height by 40mm within several seconds at the press of a button.
As well as providing tunable settings for the dampers along with also throttle mapping, the Sport Chrono package currently includes a steering wheel-mounted driving mode switch which allows the driver to choose between Normal, Sport, Sport Plus along with also Individual driving modes.
On products running the optional Sport Chrono package along with also seven-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox, yet another Sport Response button will be fitted. When activated, which provides maximum acceleration for 20 seconds by selecting the optimum gear.
Inside, the four-wheel-drive 911 adopts the same upgrades made to rear-wheel-drive products. Included will be a completely new generation of Porsche’s Communication Management (PCM) multimedia system. Its larger 7.0in touchscreen supports both Apple CarPlay along with also Android Auto connectivity, with satellite navigation coming as standard.
Pricing for four-wheel-drive 911 products starts at £81,398 for the Carrera 4 coupe. additional products include the £0,240 Carrera 4 cabriolet, £0,843 Carrera 4S coupe, £99,684 Carrera 4S cabriolet, £0,240 Targa 4 along with also £99,684 Targa 4S.
