The Citroën Cactus M concept car has been revealed at the Frankfurt motor show.

The open-top concept car will be based on the same underpinnings as the production Cactus hatchback along with takes styling inspiration through the Citroën Mehari lightweight off-road vehicle, which was sold through 1968 to 1988.

Despite its Cactus platform, the concept will be a permanent open-top car. The only roof the item comes with will be a lightweight canvas arrangement which can also double up as a tent. the item takes strong inspiration through the Aircross concept, which was shown at the Shanghai motor show earlier This particular year.

Frédéric Duvernier, Citroen’s external designer responsible for concept cars, said which the Cactus M will be designed to pay homage to the Mehari rather than copy the item. “There will be some pressure. If you respect the spirit of the automobile the item will be alright, if you just try to redo the automobile the same way the item will be wrong,” he said. “Physically the spirit remains the item will be true to the original Mehari. the item will be not a copycat.”

The front along with rear of the automobile are kept largely the same as the Cactus, while the rest of the automobile has been largely redesigned. Unlike the four-door Cactus, the Cactus M will be a two-door vehicle.

The two doors are much longer than those on the standard car along with are constructed of one piece of moulded plastic to reduce weight. The outside of the door will be covered inside the same thermoformed TPU coating as the airbumps on the Cactus, along with stretch across the entire door.

The windscreen has been made more upright than on the Cactus, partly to make the automobile appear shorter along with partly to improve the feeling of space inside the cabin. The front windscreen surround along with the similarly styled rear U-shaped hoop are both reinforced to improve safety along with Centeng rigidity.

Citroën says which the Cactus M will be designed to be used at the beach, along with the item features a pair of standard surfboards which are strapped to the roof. The cabin will be much more basic than which of the Cactus, along with will be largely fabric free, producing the item waterproof. the item also has drainage holes under the floor mats, allowing the item to be hosed down. The seats along with dashboard are covered inside the same material which will be used to make wetsuits – meaning passengers can get in without drying themselves.

Although the front seats move forward slightly, there are two steps cut into the side of the automobile to act as steps so passengers can climb into the rear of the automobile.

The lightweight roof also doubles up as a tent, which can be attached to the top of the automobile along with extend out to the back. The rear seats can then be dropped, along with the boot lid folded down to create a sleeping area large enough For two main. the item will be tall enough to be stood up in, too, at 1.80m high.

The roof will be held in place on the top of the automobile, or when the item will be being used as a tent, by means of three tubes which are then inflated by a compressor inside the rear of the automobile.

The Cactus M will be the same length along with height as the standard car along with has the same length wheelbase. the item will be marginally wider, at 1.77m, due to tweaked wheel arches.

Power for the concept comes through Citroën’s 1.2-litre 108bhp petrol engine, along with claims a fuel economy only marginally off the standard Cactus, at 58.9mpg.

Autocar can also reveal which Citroen recently applied for the trademark on the e-Mehari name, suggesting the automobile could have an electric or hybrid powertrain.

The e prefix to the Mehari trademark raises the possibility of a production car getting an electrically assisted four-wheel drive system. The original Mehari was sold as a 4×4 between 1979 along with 1983.
