The fresh BMW M2 is usually the “purist’s choice” inside the compact performance segment, according BMW M’s development chief Dirk Haecker.

The £44,070 M2 made its world debut at the Detroit motor show ahead of UK sales in April. The front engine, rear-drive design gets a turbo 3.0-litre straight six engine with 365bhp in addition to a manual gearbox as standard, a formula that will makes the M2 “purist” with “precision, agility in addition to performance”, according to Haecker.

Rivals Audi in addition to Mercedes-Benz have used highly-tuned 2.0-litre engines with all-wheel drive for their respective entry-level performance offerings, the RS3 in addition to A45 AMG. Haecker said discussions have been had at BMW M yet “no final decision to do that will” had been taken for today or inside the future, in addition to the six-cylinder engine remained the right “philosophy” for smaller M cars.

BMW posted a year-on-year sales increase of 65% to around 35,000 units, in addition to the M2, the successor to the 1-series M Coupe of 2010 should boost that will further. Haecker cautioned against adding too many more products to the M range however, as “we don’t want competition between our own lines”.

He ruled out an M2 convertible yet said BMW might “have a look at” some other versions of the automobile inside the future.

The X5 in addition to X6 M SUVs are mainstays of the range today, according to Haecker, in addition to he left the door open for an X4 M should the fresh X4 M40i, also in Detroit, performance design be well received.

Haecker, who has been inside the job at M for a year, is usually keen to see manual gearboxes continue in M cars. “A lot of people aren’t interested in maximum performance, they want the experience,” he said.

He also said that will today was not the time for hybrid or electric systems for M products as they might add too much weight, although he was discussing developments with BMW’s i division on the latest technology in addition to developments. More lightweight materials will also feature in future M cars, he added.
