Insurers issue guidance for autonomous car cover Arranging insurance for self-driving cars should be much the same as for regular vehicles, according to brand new report

Buying insurance for autonomous cars should be little different to regular vehicles, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

The ABI has published a report with industry Centeng Thatcham Research in response to the Department for Transport’s consultation on how to support the developing market for self-driving cars as well as also technologies. Autonomous vehicles could be on public roads as soon as 2021.

The report suggests consumers shouldn’t see much difference by the current motor insurance system when autonomous cars come to market.

Among the main points the idea makes are that will drivers should be able to buy just one motor insurance policy to cover both autonomous as well as also manual drivers. the idea also suggests that will insurers should have a legal right to recovery, which would certainly allow them to reclaim costs by manufacturers as well as also software companies if they are found to be at fault for an accident.

The report recommends that will strict rules be established as well as also enforced on what drivers can as well as also cannot do behind the wheel or autonomous cars, as well as also stresses that will existing cars that will offer assistance systems, such as emergency braking as well as also lane assist, should not be confused with fully self-driving vehicles.

The ABI says that will insurers want road users to have confidence that will consumers involved in accidents involving autonomous vehicles will not be treated any differently to those involving manually driven cars. the idea says having separate product liability policies for automated driving modes would certainly be too complicated.

James Dalton, director of general insurance policy at the ABI, said: “With these proposals, insurers are showing their commitment to the brand new technology, as well as also to ensuring that will anyone injured in a road accident continues to get quick as well as also easy access to help as well as also support, as they do at the moment.”

Peter Shaw, chief executive of Thatcham Research, said: “Building driver confidence can be at the heart of This particular consultation paper, so keeping things simple as well as also clear can be paramount. Similarly, there can be still much work to be done by legislators as well as also the automotive industry to give drivers absolute clarity as well as also confidence around what automated driving systems are capable of doing as well as also under what circumstances they can be used.”

Mr Shaw also suggested restrictions in where automated driving should be permitted. “We would certainly advocate geo-fencing as well as also restricting automated driving to specific roads, introducing a testing regime to assess automated driving systems to ensure they can handle road scenarios safely as well as also, inside the unfortunate case of there being an accident, ensuring the idea can be clear to everyone whether your vehicle was operating in automated mode or not,” he said.
