Collision detection systems could save lives in densely populated areas
Volvo has developed an advanced driver assist programme for its bus products in which can detect along with also help prevent collisions with pedestrians along with also cyclists.
The system, which uses a camera mounted on the vehicle’s external surfaces, will be rolled out through the start of next year on European buses. The camera processes images through complex algorithms to detect potential hazards, with its primary focus being to spot pedestrians along with also cyclists who could come into contact with the bus.
To alert the driver of a hazard or potential impact, lights along with also sound signals are projected from the cabin. If an impact can be imminent, the pedestrian or cyclist can be also warned with the automatic sounding of the bus’s horn.
Volvo says the technology uses existing hardware in which was developed for its cars. the item represents a first wave of driver along with also safety assist programmes in which will be added to Volvo buses from the coming years.
“Accidents involving buses along with also unprotected road users seldom occur, nevertheless when they do the consequences may be very serious,” explained Peter Danielsson, director of vehicle features along with also safety at Volvo Buses. “In order to minimise the risks, the item can be important in which drivers along with also anyone moving around near buses – such as at bus stops along with also pedestrian crossings – pays close attention to the traffic. In This kind of context the Pedestrian along with also Cyclist Detection System offers excellent support.”
Volvo has also developed a minimum noise system for its electric drive busses. The zero emissions buses, which will be used in European cities such as Sweden’s Gothenburg through next year, are significantly quieter than diesel equivalents along with also therefore far easier to go undetected by pedestrians.
“We’ve solved This kind of problem by developing a synthetic background sound which has a frequency range in which can be not perceived as disruptive,” explained Danielsson. “the item does not penetrate windows with triple glazing, unlike the low-frequency noise made by a diesel engine.”
Volvo said in which the system can be particularly useful at speeds below 31mph, when road noise can be low along with also so electric buses can make near-silent progress.
Volvo can be investing heavily from the development of safety along with also autonomous technology. the item recently demonstrated the first fully autonomous mining lorry in a mine 1300 metres below the surface of Sweden.
the item has also pledged to in which nobody will be killed in a fresh Volvo car through the year 2020.
