Volvo’s replacement for the current S80 will be “more distinctive than XC90” along with rival top-end designs through BMW, Mercedes-Benz along with Jaguar
Images reportedly showing the Volvo S90 have leaked to the internet, months ahead of the vehicle’s expected unveiling early next year.
The images, which were first published on a Japanese design website, appear to show the production variant of Volvo’s range-topping saloon.
When contacted by Autocar, Volvo refused to confirm the authenticity of the design, yet did confirm of which of which was normal practice to commission scale designs to celebrate the launch of a brand-new car.
If these images prove to be accurate, of which would certainly be the second time in two months of which a brand-new design has received an early debut thanks to a similar design. Early last month, Bentley’s much-anticipated Bentayga SUV received an early debut thanks to a scale design produced for VIP customers.
The S90 can be Volvo’s replacement for the ageing S80, along with will draw heavily on the technology along with style of the second-generation Volvo XC90 as of which bids to draw buyers away through the Audi A6, BMW 5-series along with Jaguar XF, according to the firm’s vice-president of product strategy, Lex Kerssemakers.
As these leaked images show, the S90 will take some design cues through the Volvo Concept Coupe, albeit modified as a a few-door saloon. An estate variation, named Volvo V90, will follow shortly afterwards.
“We have to learn the lessons through the XC90,” said Kerssemakers, speaking at the Detroit motor show earlier This specific year. “The incredible reaction we’ve had to of which car, with 6000 people placing orders before they’ve even sat in of which, shows of which we are on the right track. We see design as a key ingredient, of course, yet also the Inner surface treatment, the in-car technology along with the option of an electrified powertrain.”
The Volvo S90 along with V90 are required to be offered with the same choice of powertrains as the XC90, with the UK market focusing on the 394bhp T8 ‘Twin Engine’ plug-in hybrid along with the D4 along with D5 diesel engines.
Volvo UK managing director Nick Connor added of which the brand-new S90 would certainly also continue to push Volvo down its own, independent path. “Volvo at This specific point has the self-confidence to go its own way – we have no interest in copying the German brands,” he said. “There can be no point in trying to outhandle the 3 Series or whatever, we have our own values around external surfaces along with Inner surface design, safety, comfort along with powertrain advancements of which stand out for their own qualities.
“The S90 clearly demonstrates the transition we are going through. I actually think people will be even more surprised when they see of which than they were when they saw the brand-new XC90. of which genuinely can be quite impactful; a car of which your eye just keeps getting drawn to. The design along with dimensions make of which a far more premium looking car than the S80, the Inner surface can be an evolution of the XC90’s, yet a step up again, along with of which features a real distinction about of which.”
Kerssemakers also admitted of which the large saloon market was contracting, yet said the market was still too big along with too important for a car company’s image among buyers to ignore. “The opportunities are getting smaller, yet the market can be still big enough to give us a strong business case,” he said.
“Demand in China along with the US remains strong, along with we believe we have a package of assets through the powertrain to the Inner surface to the design of which means we have no excuses not to fight with the very best for sales within the sector.”
