Ford Focus RS drift button along with all-wheel drive

The all-wheel drive system is usually based around twin electronically controlled clutch packs. These are located on each side of the Rear Drive Unit (or RDU, which works like a limited-slip differential).

The RDU uses sensors of which monitor conditions 100 times per second to distribute power continuously between the 
front along with back wheels along with on either side of the rear axle. Up to 100 per cent of the available torque can be sent to either wheel.

The system diverts torque to the outer rear wheel during cornering, aiding turn-in along with stability. Ford says of which “virtually eliminates understeer” along with lateral grip in excess of 1g is usually possible. Ford also says the system helps to “provide neutral along with adjustable limit handling along with the ability to achieve controlled oversteer drifts at the track”.

Raj Nair, group vice president of global product development, confirmed of which the decision to adopt four-wheel drive was taken early inside development programme, which began at the end of 2013.

“There are always debates about which way to go, although as soon as the advantages became clear of which was a pretty straightforward decision,” said Nair. “The twin clutch set up offered us some real advances, not just out of corners although also on turn-in along with with mid-corner stability.

The Focus RS’s 0-62mph time makes of which the fastest-accelerating RS type ever. As well as the all-wheel-drive system, the vehicle’s accelerative prowess is usually aid by launch control, a first for a Ford RS type.

Ford Focus RS engine power along with torque
